Family wins Tripler cancer case

By Star-Bulletin staff

HONOLULU - A federal court judge has awarded $275,000 to the family of a man who died from cancer after treatment at Tripler Army Medical Center.

Tripler doctors discovered a prostate nodule in 1984 during a routine examination of retired Army Col. Alvan P. Parker.

But Parker was not told of the finding, according to testimony he gave in a videotaped deposition before his death.
The tape was played during the non-jury trial.

A year after the nodule was discovered, other doctors diagnosed Parker as having a serious cancer condition from which Parker died in 1988 at the age of 78.

The judge found Tripler liable for medical malpractice.

Parker's family was represented by attorneys Mark S. Davis and Michael Livingston of the firm Davis & Levin.
