Marine Gets 30 Days in Jail for Fatal Crash in Hawaii

March 30, 2011, Hauula, HI ― A 1-year jail sentence handed down to Eric Wycklendt, a lance corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, has been withdrawn, StarAdvertiser.com has reported.
Wycklendt had been sentenced in a fatal collision that occurred in 2008 in Hauula. Wycklendt, who was 19 at the time, had been driving an armed forces vehicle when he collided with a minivan.
On March 22nd, Michael Wilson, a Circuit Court Judge, deferred Wycklendt’s plea and gave him the opportunity to have the charge removed from his record. Wycklendt will still have to go to jail, but only for 30 days. He had entered a plea of no contest to the charge of negligent homicide of the third degree.
When Wilson imposed the 1-year sentence in January, he offered to reconsider the jail sentence if authorities from the Marine Corps showed proof of Wycklendt’s training in operating armed forces vehicles on public roads.
Wycklendt's driver’s license has been revoked permanently. When he collided with the minivan, he killed a 57-year-old woman. It was just his third time behind the wheel of the military vehicle.
If you or a loved one has been the victim of negligence in a serious traffic accident, you should consult with a Honolulu accident lawyer to discuss whether you are entitled to file a personal injury claim.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Crash Statistics, there were 109 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Hawaii.
As a service to the residents of the Big Island and surrounding areas, our firm will frequently publish blogs about local traffic accidents. We do this to raise awareness about the common types of motor vehicle accidents occurring in Hawaii that may result in serious injury or traffic fatalities.

Common accidents include, but are not limited to:

  • single-vehicle accidents;
  • accidents caused by hazardous road conditions; and
  • accidents caused by aggressive driving or distracted drivers.

If you have been named in this blog or you are the victim's family member or friend and would like the blog posting removed from our website, please feel free to contact us and we will promptly accommodate your request.
