Woman in Kahala Critically Injured in Hit and Run at Kahala Mall
August 24 – Kahala - Hawaii News Now reports that police in Honolulu are dealing with a 3rd hit and run crash in just 2 days. Charlene Alipio, 60, was at the Kahala Mall when she witnessed two men breaking into her car. As the men drove away in her car, Alipio was struck and critically injured. She was then attended to by four people who were nearby during the accident. Witnesses say she was bleeding from her head. While waiting for help they attempted to keep the bleeding under control. Alipio became unresponsive and was sent to the hospital in critical condition. Police found Alipio’s vehicle the next day but have not caught the men responsible for the theft and accident. The men face serious charges, possibly up to 10 years in prison for fleeing the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 Crash Statistics, there were 107 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Hawaii.
