Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Kalihi Tour Bus

September 9, 2010 – Kalihi, HI – The Star Advertiser reports that a tour bus was involved in a fatal bicycle accident.

A 21-year-old female bicyclist was killed when a Roberts Hawaii tour bus struck her bike at a busy intersection in Kalihi. The tour bus and bicyclist were traveling in the same direction down Dillingham Boulevard when the tour bus made a right turn onto Waiakamilo Road. The bicyclist had continued to go straight into the crosswalk, and was then struck by the bus.

The female bicyclist, who remains unnamed, was in critical condition when paramedics treated her at the scene of the accident. They transferred her to a trauma center where she was later pronounced dead.

The driver, an 18-year-veteran of the tour bus company, has been taken off duty pending an investigation into the bicycle accident. This is the third fatal accident involving a Roberts Hawaii tour bus in the past 15 months.

It is also one of many traffic accidents to occur at the Dillingham-Waiakamilo intersection, which does not have left-turn signals.
