January 11, 2011 – Oahu, HI – According to the Star Advertiser, 2 people were killed and 6 others injured in a 5-car crash.
The multi-vehicle crash occurred on January 1 along Kunia Road. According to eyewitness accounts, 2 sedans, a 2006 Lexus and a 2007 Mitsubishi, were northbound at a high rate of speed when the Mitsubishi crossed over into the southbound lane of Kunia Road.
The Mitsubishi crashed into a 1992 Mercury sedan and then flipped. A 12-year-old passenger in the Mitsubishi was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mitsubishi was taken to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.
The other passengers in the Mitsubishi, ages 19, 17 and 14, were also taken to Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition.
The 42-year-old driver of the Mercury that was struck by the Mitsubishi was also pronounced dead at the scene.
The Lexus, which appeared to have been racing with the Mitsubishi, lost control and spun into the southbound lane, where it struck a 2010 Nissan pickup truck. Both drivers of the vehicles were taken to Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition.
A 1994 Nissan sedan that had been traveling behind the Mercury was struck by debris and hit a dirt embankment but none of the occupants in the vehicle were injured.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2009 Crash Statistics, there were 109 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Hawaii.
