July 26, 2010 – Kaneohe, HI – A pedestrian is in critical condition after being struck on Kamehameha Highway near the intersection of Pahia Road.
In a report from Hawaii News Now, the 50-year-old victim was walking on the sidewalk fronting the Shell gas station when a car exiting the driveway failed to see him. The incident took place around 5:30 PM Monday evening and traffic was re-routed for 2 hours as police conducted their investigation.
The man, whose name has been withheld, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The driver of the other vehicle has not yet been charged, although alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors in this pedestrian accident. Kamehameha Highway was reopened by 8 PM after the scene was cleared.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Crash Statistics, there were 107 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Hawaii.
