February 4, 2011 – Honolulu, HI – When a Honolulu man never arrived to pick up his friend on January 28, a search resulted in the discovery of a fatal ATV accident in Laupahoehoe.
Hawaii News Now reports the victim was found face down in a stream, killed in an accident involving his ATV. Police investigating the fatal ATV accident in Laupahoehoe believe the man was driving across a bridge when the ATV tumbled off the side. The victim landed first with the ATV falling on top of his leg, pinning it to the ground.
The victim’s friend began searching for him the morning after he did not show to pick her up. She discovered his body in the stream and contacted police. Investigators have classified the case as an accident and the victim is not being identified at this time.
ATV accidents can often be caused by defective models that have been recalled by the manufacturer. Over the past years, several ATV models have been recalled because of faulty components and stability issues. ATVs are often difficult to control and defective models can cause loss of control and serious, fatal accidents.
Even single rider crashes can result potentially in a Hawaii personal injury claim if the accident was caused by a manufacturer’s defect in the ATV design or production. Road conditions also can be to blame if the rider is on a government-maintained road designated for ATV use. No matter the situation, discussing your case with a Honolulu personal injury attorney can help you evaluate your potential personal injury claim.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2009 Crash Statistics, there were 109 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Hawaii.
