Distracted drivers are causing the majority of accidents throughout the United States, and an increase in cell phone use while driving is to blame. Drivers aren’t just making calls on their cell phones, they are accessing their phones while driving to get directions, check their email, and post on social media sites. This is causing a significant increase in the amount of distracted drivers on the road, as the younger generation thinks nothing of driving their vehicle while using their phone at the same time. With close to one million registered vehicles in the State of Hawaii, there are close to 10,000 serious car accidents in the State every year. Roads continue to be improved in the State of Hawaii, and road safety awareness is a major focus. Despite this increase in awareness, traffic accidents aren’t going down. Car accidents between pedestrians, motorcycles, cars and big trucks continue to cause fatalities in Hawaii at similar numbers every year. While weather is generally not a significant factor, distracted driving is a big problem in the State of Hawaii.

  • Speed was a factor in more than nine thousand six hundred crashes in the United States in 2013.
  • Alcohol causes a significant number of accidents every year, and in 2013 alcohol was a factor in 10,706 fatalities.
  • More than 2,000 people were injured in 2013 due to drivers going through red lights.
  • Drivers missing red lights kill roughly 900 people every year.
