Loretta A. Sheehan, JD
Loretta Sheehan is one of Hawaii’s most experienced and effective trial lawyers. Her thirty-year career in the courtroom, with over 45 jury trials, has earned her a reputation for methodical preparation and passionate advocacy for her clients. Now an attorney at the prominent Honolulu law firm of Davis Levin Livingston, Ms. Sheehan devotes her practice exclusively to cases involving serious personal injury or death, with a particular focus on the representation of individuals who have been injured through medical malpractice.
After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Boston University, she attended Georgetown Law School. She spent 24 years as a prosecutor, first for the City and County of Honolulu and later for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Ms. Sheehan then decided to move into handling civil cases, taking up the cause of “the little guy” to provide a voice for those who need it the most.
And what distinguishes Ms. Sheehan in the courtroom? “She has a piercing intellect and a command of the most complicated facts,” according to Mark Davis, Ms. Sheehan’s colleague at Davis Levin Livingston. “Sitting next to Loretta at counsel table during a trial, one cannot help but be impressed by her commanding presence and impeccable preparation.” And for Ms. Sheehan, her success comes not just from her thoughtful presentations to judges and juries, but also from her heartfelt passion for each client’s cause.
“For me, this is much more than just a job. I consider it both an awesome responsibility and a privilege to provide a voice for my clients’ in their quest for justice. This is a spirit we share among the attorneys at Davis Levin Livingston, where every case involves a coordinated team effort. The work we do – representing the victims of negligence and even intentional misconduct – requires a great deal of heart. People call our law firm when something tragic has happened and an injustice needs to be redressed. Using our extraordinary system of justice, we have the opportunity to assist them in their hour of need. I truly believe that what we do really makes a difference in their lives. We feel that every day. That’s why I love my work and why I love the colleagues with whom I work. We are determined to do everything we can as trial lawyers to repair the damage that has been done to the lives of our clients.”
During her years at Davis Levin Livingston, Ms. Sheehan has participated in numerous record setting Hawaii verdicts and settlements, including the largest individual recovery in a wrongful death case. But despite her busy career, Ms. Sheehan has devoted her free time to community efforts designed to improve the lives of women and children. In 2007, she was honored for her humanitarian efforts with the prestigious Jefferson Award for her efforts in the field of domestic violence. In 2014, legislators invited her to speak on the topic of domestic violence as they investigated the Honolulu Police Department’s management of domestic violence incidents.
