August 9, 2010 – Oahu, HI – Members of the Red Cross of Constantine, a small fraternal order on the island of Oahu, are mourning the loss of two of their members following their quarterly meeting on August 5.
Star Advertiser reports that Dexter Lum, 68, and Martin Wong, 77, were leaving the meeting at Treetops restaurant when they were struck and killed by an SUV in the parking lot. One of the men was pinned under the SUV and had to be extracted while others on the scene attempted to provide CPR to the other.
Two other men, ages 52 and 81, were also hit in the accident. The 52-year-old was not injured while the other victim was taken to the Straub Clinic & Hospital in serious condition.
The driver of the SUV, a 65-year-old Kaneohe man, was moving the vehicle for its owner, Sonny Nahale’a, who had suffered a stroke 2 years prior. His condition required his vehicle to be modified for left-footed driving, reversing the accelerator and brake pedals. The driver pressed the wrong pedal, accelerating and hitting the 4 men. He was arrested for suspicion of 2 counts of second-degree negligent homicide and later released pending investigation.
