Son Indicted for Father’s Death in Fatal DUI Accident in Nanakuli

September 21, 2010 – Nanakuli, HI – The Star Advertiser reports that a 22-year-old man was recently indicted by an Oahu grand jury for first-degree negligent homicide in a fatal car accident that killed his father earlier this year. The crash took place near their home on January 23. 
Logan Kamuela Kaimo Awong, of Nanakuli, was driving their pickup truck on Haleakala Avenue when the crash occurred. Jason Awong, 39, who was a passenger in the front seat, was killed in the fatal car accident.
Property damage also occurred in the crash. The truck first hit a mailbox, rock wall, and then knocked down a utility pole. The truck also struck a fire hydrant and tree, then crossed the road and crashed into another utility pole.
At the time of the accident, police reported that speeding and alcohol played a part in the crash. Logan Awong suffered minor injuries and at the time was arrested for first-degree negligent injury, drunk driving with a blood alcohol content of .14, and driving with a suspended license.
If Logan Awong is found guilty for the negligent homicide charge, he could face a 10-year prison sentence.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Crash Statistics, there were 107 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Hawaii.
