HONOLULU – Hawaii Lawyers Care, the pro bono clearinghouse for legal services, will be sponsoring a Neighborhood legal Clinic at the Waimanalo Health Center beginning in April. The Neighborhood Legal Clinic will provide quality legal assistance for low income individuals and families in their own community.
A Neighborhood legal Clinic provides three types of services:
– a pro se divorce workshop, which teaches people how to complete and file their own divorce documents,
– advice-consultation sessions allow individuals to meet with volunteer attorneys for 30 minutes to discuss their legal problems,
– application assistance for HLC’s services.
A single Neighborhood Legal Clinic assists 20 to 30 people on a Saturday morning.
“Hawaii Lawyers Care has been able to provide service to over 300 people through its Neighborhood legal Clinics since it was established in August 1993,” said Judy Sobin, Executive Director of HLC. “The clinics continue to be an important avenue for meeting the legal needs of those individuals who are unable to afford exorbitant legal fees.”
Due to the extraordinary recruitment efforts of the attorney Thomas Grande, the Windward clinics will be staffed by volunteer attorneys who reside on the Windward side. Grande has recruited the following attorneys for the Windward Oahu. Neighborhood Legal Clinic: Joseph Ahuna, Ronald Albu, Hayden Aluli, David Bettencourt, Tom DiGrazia, Nathan Gooding, Seth Reiss, Shirley Devaris, Douglas Crosier, Mitch Werth, Yuklin Alulu and Douglas Spencer.
The Native Hawaiian Bar Association, under the recruitments efforts of attorney Nathan Aipa, will also be providing volunteers for the NLC at the Waimanalo Health Center. Members will also be assisting at the Nanakuli Clinic.
