79-Year-Old Killed in Hilo Pedestrian Accident

September 27, 2010 – Hilo, HI – Hawaii 24/7 reports that a 79-year-old woman was killed on September 14 in a pedestrian accident in downtown Hilo.
Tomiko K. Shimazu, 79, of Hilo, died from injuries she sustained in a pedestrian accident with a motor vehicle at the intersection of Kinoole Street and Haili Street.
Shimazu was attempting to cross Kinoole Street from the southwest corner when she was struck in the crosswalk by a 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck.
The driver of the vehicle, 62-year-old man from Hilo, was making a left turn from Haili Street when his vehicle struck Shimazu. The driver was not injured in the accident. Shimazu was taken to Hilo Medical Center where she later died from her injuries. Police did not suspect that alcohol, drugs or speed were a factor in the pedestrian accident.
The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a negligent homicide investigation. This is the 21st traffic fatality on the Big Island in comparison to 19 fatalities at this time last year.
